‘Klinker’ is Dutch for ‘vowel’. An open sound, a voice. ‘Klinken’ means ‘to sound’. Freely translated, ‘Klinker’ could mean ‘sounder’. ‘Sound’ in Dutch is ‘Klank’.
First, let me tell you a little bit about Flanders and its language. Flanders is the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Our variety of Dutch is called Flemish. It shares the same vocabulary and grammar as Dutch but that’s where the story ends.
The main difference between Flanders and Holland and in their languages seems to find its cause in that Flanders suffers from a sort of collective-minority-complex infused with a Catholic guilt-trip, and a tradition of having other nations and empires piss all over it. If you look at Flemish history, you can see that we’ve been under the reign of almost every one of our near or distant neighbours.
We’ve learnt to adapt to the laws and quirks of our rulers. Then, when new ones came along and we adapted again. That’s why Flanders seems to have such a hard time taking anything too seriously. We understand how surreal things can get from one day to the other. We were raised with inconsistencies. It makes that Belgium is an inconsistent country, a patchwork of leftovers from France, the Netherlands, and a bit of Germany. Flanders is in itself an even bigger patchwork, we are splintered. Every village has its own dialect and its own mentality. We are divided in unity — or, to put it differently, we are united by disunity.
The intro to this piece was made with a Yamaha CS1X. I played some arpeggio’s and layered some effects on top and reversed it all, because sometimes a going backwards is all a good piece needs to become better. Now, just before the piece kicks into its danceable second part you can hear a snippet of a recording I made of the Berlin Underground. The signal goes, the doors close and off we go!
